Goldsboro Skin & Dermatology Center Newbern | FAQ's :: Excisional Surgery, Neosporin®

Excisional Surgery / Wound Biopsy Aftercare

*** If you notice redness spreading out from the wound, thick odorous drainage, increased swelling, heat or tenderness at the wound or have any other questions or problems, please contact us right away. ***

Wound Care / Post-operative Instructions

  • Clean wound with tap water
  • Apply Polysporin, Neosporin, or Bacitracin ointment
  • Cover with a Band-Aid 24 hours a day
  • Change the dressing twice a day

Follow these instructions until the area is completely healed or you return to the office for suture removal. It is important to keep the wound moist with ointment and covered with a Band-Aid in order to prevent a thick scab from forming, which will delay wound healing and produce more scar formation

Cryosurgery (Freezing) Aftercare Instructions

Typically, a small scab or blister will form over the areas treated with liquid nitrogen (freezing). The scab will remain for several days, and then the scab will slough off with washing. In the event a blister (blood or clear fluid) forms after freezing, you may puncture the blister with a sterile needle to drain the fluid. Then, leave the roof of the blister in place and cover the area with antibiotic ointment (Neosporin, Polysporin etc.) and a bandage. Continue to remove the bandage, clean the area, re-apply antibiotic ointment, and cover the area with a bandage daily until the area completely heals.
